Begijnhof in Amsterdam

Begijnhofs are enclosed courtyards where women lived like nuns, although they took no monastic vows. They are in the Spui district and in the Gedempte Begijnesloot. These little houses have been declared Historical Monuments. Here you can find a peaceful atmosphere and beautiful green courtyards covered with large chestnut trees. Besides the entrance, you can find the “Houten Huys", one of the oldest houses of Amsterdam dating back to 1470.
